How long to clean.....
a AR-15? I am a little anal in cleaning my firearms and was wondering how time I need to set aside. 1 week, 1day, 6 hrs. J/k. iGrok

Everyone has their personal preferences. I have two tools.... Bore Snake for the barrel Break Free - CLP for everything else The Break Free does seem to dry out, so before I go shooting, I always spray down the moving parts... If the SHTF, ONE good coat of CLP, and you're ready to rock... |
Re: How long to clean.....
If you are anal when it comes to cleaning firearms (good for you), then your first time cleaning an AR-15 could take you the better part of half an hour or more. After you've done it a few times, it might take you about 20 minutes. Maybe less. Make sure you have an old towel to set that bad boy on. You'll have some parts strewn about.

1) Find/steal/borrow/buy a stop watch or a clock.
2) Start the stop watch or mark the time on the clock. 3) Clean your shit. 4) Stop the stop watch and figure out how long it took. I know, I'm brilliant. |
Re: How long to clean.....
#rd on the bore snake. I love those things. The only problem is remembering what snake goes with what gun. I also have the otis kit, but have yet to use it.

Re: How long to clean.....
Is a boresnake worth using on a pistol? What's the nice thing about the boresnake?
I use cotton patches, rod, gunoil, nylon brush and brass brush at present along with a silicon wipe thingy. Takes me about 10 minutes to do just a basic clean, and 30 minutes for a reasonably thorough going over. Reminds me, I need to clean the Glock, damn thing is pretty filthy at the moment. |

I have always been afraid to use the brass brush because I think it is going to scrape the inside shaft of my pistol. I have a very heavy hand when I clean........I always opt for the plastic. Even the Sagia's come with plastic brushes. Anybody have any bad experinence with brass??? T |
Re: How long to clean.....
+1 on Boresnakes for field-expedient cleaning for chrome-lined AKs and ARs.
Excessive scrubbing of rifle bores without using a protective bore-guide for the cleaning rod can damage rifling. When I need to clean other rifles and pistols, I prefer to let SOLVENT do the work. And I prefer nylon bristles for cleaning rifle and pistol bores... |
Re: How long to clean.....
Time wise, it depends on how many beers I've had, but generally it's about 15 minutes these days....
